Presidents’ Report – Year in Review 2009/10

Overall the society had a good year, supporting its incorporation goals and objectives to improve the lives of residents in the Westsyde community and particularly the recreational opportunities for our youth.  In this regard the society in June of 2009 paid the balance of $2000 of our $12,000 donation to the City of Kamloops for the completion of the basketball court in Centennial Park.  The City of Kamloops followed up on its commitments to upgrade the Westsyde Pool, with renovation of the reception area and construction of a family and handicap change room.  The society also became involved in the pool annual operational schedule and clarified for the community its closure policy with assistance from City staff.

The society continued to publish several issues of the Westsyde Pride with the enthusiastic help of its editor, Jacki Andersen and expand both circulation and information in the North Newspaper, part of the Kamloops This Week publication.

We raised funds this year for society projects with our monthly Meat Draw at the Westsyder Pub, coordinated by Ted Erickson, which to date has raised over $5,000.  In November the society sponsored a very successful Craft Fair at the Baptist Fellowship Church and conducted a Spring Dance in April 2010 with music, which was well received, provided by the Well Hungarians.  Funds raised went to support the annual Halloween fireworks display on Turtle Mountain, coordinated by Everett Bostock and his crew and the water park project in Centennial Park.

The society had several meetings with City parks staff on the planning of the future Centennial Water Park and a Dog Park, initially proposed by Angela Mattson.  Society executive members attended several staff, Park and Recreation Committee, and City Council budget discussion meetings and we were successful in securing $25,000 for the Centennial Dog Park, which started construction in May 2010.  The water park had several successful discussions about location, design and a cost estimate for the first phase was provided for the family washrooms/change rooms.  This project however is tied to a revised overall park plan.

The society participated in a Society Act Review conducted by the Deputy Minister of Finance, and Steve Delaney our VP did a lot of work updating and upgrading the society web site.  Our Treasurer, Diane Kuchma coordinated the expenditure and record of our funds during the year, particularly the Society Act reporting and our Volunteer Directors insurance required to indemnify the actions and activities of both our executive members and the events that we sponsor.  Jim/Denise Strathern our Membership Coordinators did a lot of work updating both the membership list and application form.

Brad Labrecque of Cedar Dental continued to provide his premises for the society to conduct its monthly meetings and our new Secretary this year Elaine Skistod kept an official record of our meetings.  Lucie Bourgeious a Director at Large continues to assist in project and event activities and has coordinated the nominations for our June AGM.

In our next operational year, 2010/11 the society proposes to work further with our City partnership on planning and funding the new water park and finalizing the Westsyde Pool improvements as proposed to include the steam and sauna rooms.
